Slow Food Phoenix is hosting a Tomato Fest February 13th from 10am-4pm at Maya’s Farm at The Farm at South Mountain. Tomatoes can be hard to grow in the desert. Come join us and learn all the ins and outs of being successful with tomatoes.

We will have classes taught by local Tomato experts on choosing the variety that’s right for you, prep and planting in your garden, pruning and caring for your Tomatoes, and how to keep them around all year long. ($10. each, or all 3 for $25). To attend the event and purchase tomato starts is free. To attend any one or all three of the classes is $10 each or all three for $25. Purchasing a ticket in advance assures you a space.
The class schedule is as follows:
10:00 – Tim Moore will teach best soil practices
12:00 – Carl Seacat will teach Tomatoes 101
2:00 –Dave Parkin will teach Keeping Tomatoes year round.

Once you have your Tomatoes growing and are harvesting them what do you do with them? We will have local chefs from restaurants such as Quiescence showing you some of the wonderful dishes you can make with those beautiful orbs.
The best part of all, over 1,000 Heirloom Tomato plants will be for sale in varieties such as Brandywine, Black Krim, Cherokee Purple, Paul Robeson, and Snow White, all from local growers who specialize in Tomatoes.

There will also be local Tomatoes available to give you a taste of what’s to come in your garden. Growers such as Carl Secat from Secat Gardens and Tim Moore with his students form Gila crossing community school will have local Tomatoes for sale to get you started on your Tomato adventure.
